EDINBURGH (GREAT BRITAIN, SCOTLAND)
In the north the New City district is located. In spite of its name, its building up began in XVIII century. A monument to Walter Scott, the building of the Scotch Royal Bank on St. Andrew (the Patron of Scotland) Square and Charlotte Square with beautiful buildings of XVIII century are located here. In Edinburgh there are the famous national gallery of Scotland and Portrait Gallery, the King’s Museum, the museum of Modern History and History of Scotland. The National Gallery is one of the oldest galleries of Scotland. It was opened to general public in 1859. One can see works of art and sculpture of different periods here –– from Renaissance to post-Impressionism representing art of many European countries.
In Edinburgh in August international “Fringe” festival of music and drama takes place; it is a unique festival in its kind by size and variety of kinds of art (dancing, music, drama, circus and so forth) represented in it.
One hour drive away from Edinburgh on the coast of the sea there is a small ancient city of St. Andrews where the oldest Scottish university and the oldest golf link are located. Arran Island, to which one can get by ferry from Androssan, is also worth your attention. Museum “Scotland in miniature” is opened on the island. A half hour drive away from the city is Sterling –– a very beautiful old university city.
