PISA (Italy)

In Pisa yout attention will be attrated by Piazza dei Cavalieri, an exquisite Santa Maria della Spina Church and San Mateo National Museum with a vast collection of works of art and sculpture, mainly by Tuscanian masters, the collecting of which was started in XVIII century. The pieces of exhibition represent mainly Roman and medieval periods.

Piazza dei Cavalieri is a square surrounded by Gothic style buildings; during the Roman empire there was a forum here, but in XVI century it was rebuilt on Cosimo Medici’s order. One of the sights of interest of the square is Torre dei Gualandi, which is now adjoined to Palazzo dell’Orologio of XVI century, where Duke Ugolino was left to die of starving (as described in Dante’s “Divine Comedy”). Vasari was comissioned to build Palazzo dei Cavalieri, which initially was the headquarters of the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen and now is the home of Scuola Normale Superiore University. The Santo Stefano Church decorated with war tropheys that belonged to the Order was also built according to Vasari’s design.
