SORRENTO (ITALY)

If one desires to swim, one should better rent a catamaran and swim far off from the shore, where an unusually beautiful view opens on Sorrento and the coastal line. On the horizon, in the clouds the two-headed cone of the Vesuvius is floating, reminding of the tragic events that took place on the other side of the Naples Bay, in Pompeii. Sorrento is famous for its lemon groves. Of amazingly bright yellow fruit very unlike those sold in Moscow liquor Limoncello is made. The strength and sweetness of the liquor varies from shop to shop, since every shop owner has their own technology. Many little shops treat their customers to this beverage free of charge, knowing that the visitors after savoring a glass will not resist the temptation to buy a whole bottle. Italian pastry chefs saturate cake layers with the lemon liquor and achieve unrivaled pastry delicacies. Limoncello is the most famous souvenir tourists buy in Sorrento.

The local cuisine is not very much different from the traditional Italian one: the same pasta and pizza, but cooked with a larger amount of seafood. If one visits Sorrento it is a must to visit fish restaurants. The most pleasant of them are located near the Marina Piccola port. Because of the variety of fish here one loses his breath: sardines, tuna fish, eels, shrimps and other exotic inhabitants of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The fish here is always fresh, from the last catch. The ways of cooking it are of great multitude. The Royal Shrimps baked with lemon juice on grill will be remembered by the most fastidious gourmets.

Massa Lubrence is an admirable little resort town located on a very beautiful spot several kilometers away from Sorrento. Many years ago, in 1688, the settlement suffered from earthquakes that destroyed most of the ancient monuments. Since that time, many of them were restored and reconstructed. On the Piazza Vescovado in Massa Lubrence a famous Cathedral is located; it was reconstructed in XVIII century. Not far away there is another place of interest in the city – Bishop’s Palace (Palazzo Vescovile). But the best characteristic of the city is its coastal part Marina della Lobra with its beautiful beaches and a bay.

The other coast of the Sorrento peninsula is worldwide famous for its resorts – Punta Della Camponella, Nerano and Marina Del Cantone. Nerano is a small city at the foot of Sant Constanzo Mountain, which is the agricultural center in the region. Marina Del Cantone is a settlement near Nerano, which is famous for its mild climate and the beach line, which stretches throughout the entire coast. Rest in Sorrento is characterized by a special flavor, deliberateness and solidity. There is no rush here typical to many resorts, and swimming in the sea is not an end in itself, but only adds another color to the gamma of sensations one gets after this excellent rest. Yet, the main enchantment of Sorrento is undoubtedly the nature itself: the landscapes, sea, plants, healthful air, while sea tours and archeology excursions to historical places will make your rest time special.
