POSITANO (ITALY)

Positano

Positano

Amalfi coast… These words awake in those, who have been in this paradise-like nook, a lot of impressions, emotions and recollections of small resort towns plunged in green trees and flowers, clinging to the rocks on the very strip of sea coast. Blossoming tangerine and almond trees, amazingly bright blue sea, white yachts at the wharf, the smell of lemons… The cut-through coastline and the transparent sea turn Costa Amalfitano into one of the most elite resort areas of Italy. The cities of the Amalfi coast − Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Minori, Maiori, Salerno, Ravello, Cetara − are filled with southern flavor.

The road, that winds as a ribbon along the costal line, exhibits to tourists vivid little houses, lemon and orange orchards that descend in terraces to the sea.

Most of hotels are located on rocky terraces above the sea, but some have private beaches; one can get down to the sea by lift or staircase. A charming view on the sea can be seen through the hotel windows.

The Amalfi coast is the favorite place of rest for respectable people preferring lack of hurry and absence of fuss of crowded resorts. The Amalfi coast cities have from of old attracted members of social elites including the Russian one. Many famous people − from the Royal family to writers, poets, musicians and artists − have found rest and inspiration here. Even now Hollywood stars and famous politicians keep coming here. On the hills among the citrus groves there are villas of celebrities. The Kennedy spouses, Sophia Loren and Carla Ponte spent several happy days here.

Positano (Campania region) is one of the most famous resorts of southern Italy and is located several kilometers away from famous Sorrento, 60 kilometers from the Naples, 260 kilometers from Rome. The beauty of the local landscapes as early as in XIX century made Positano a Mecca for artists. The small town is scattered over three small valleys stuck between the mountains and the sea. The characteristic multicolored little houses climb up steep mountain slopes. From almost any spot of the town one sees the splendid view of the sea. Like many other resorts of the Amalfi coast of Italy, Positano has been famous from ancient times. As legend has it, it was founded by the sea god Neptune (Poseidon) himself. Little Galli islands are mentioned in Odyssey; according to Homer it was here where the sirens dwelt. Watchtowers, built to protect the city from Saracen pirates, have been preserved in Positano since the medieval times.
