POSITANO (ITALY)

Santa Maria Assunta church is a Roman church of XIII century with a dome faced with majolica tiles (its richly decorated tiled roof is considered the landmark of the city). The altar of the church is decorated with a miraculous icon “Black Madonna” by a Byzantine master. According to a legend it was carried to the coast of Positano by sea waves. Annually, on August 15, a festivity is held in Positano dedicated to this icon, which is considered to be the patroness of the city.

Modern private homes and hospitals along the coast are squeezed to one another so tightly, that the owners can hold each others hands without stepping outside. Many-leveled staircases circle down between medieval houses, modern hotels allowing a splendid view of the mountains and sea. The center of the resort is turned into a pedestrian zone, and automobiles should be left here on parking lots outside the city limits.

There is a small port in the city where fishermen’s boats speckle. Early in the morning one can buy at the local market the freshest fish of the latest catch. While in the afternoon one can depart from the city station to Sorrento, Capri, Salerno, Amalfi, Menori, Maiori. One can also spend his evening in Positano on the beach, the dark sand of which keeps the heat of warm summer; or take a walk and visit stores, bars and restaurants. Positano is renowned as a center of manufacture of summer clothing. Small, but elegant shops and boutiques can be found here on every street. And at the night time one can visit famous dancing club “The Africana.”

Southerners are well known for their hospitality and generosity. Classical set of dishes an Italian eats for lunch consists of: Mozzarella (a very soft cheese made of buffalo cow’s milk), anchovies and sausage. The second course is pasta. This magic word is used to call an unbelievable multitude of macaronis that have hundreds of names and differences in taste. Their makers are Italian food industry producers such as, Macaroni, Vermicelli, Ravioli. Pasta is richly seasoned with a sauce and strewn with grated Parmesan cheese. Such dinner is unthinkable without wine, which is drunk in abundance. The meal ends with very tasty lemon liquor Limoncello, which is good for digestion. The motherland of big tasty lemons that are used for making this beverage is the Amalfi coast.
