GLASGOW (GREAT BRITAIN, SCOTLAND)

Glasgow

Glasgow

Glasgow is a Scottish city in the north-west of Great Britain. It is the third biggest city by population in the country. Together with all its suburbs and neighboring cities Glasgow makes an agglomeration Clydeside, being its center, with the population of 1.8 million people.

The name of the city, most likely, is derived from the Gaelic “gleschu” – that is, a green valley or a favored green place. Foundation of the city is commonly traced back to the middle of VI century. In the Middle Ages Glasgow was a little fishermen settlement. William the Lion Heart granted the city official charter in 1175, after which the city started growing to reach its heyday in XV century, when the university was founded, second biggest in the country. In the course of industrial overturn and development of colonial expansion of Great Britain, in which Scottish bourgeoisie also took part, Glasgow turned into one of the most significant industrial and port centers of the country.

Glasgow has a unique architectural appearance: wide, straight streets with multistory buildings, vast parks next to huge port and industrial quarters. There are many interesting buildings here, built in the style of Modern. Among them are: School of Arts in Glasgow, Queen’s Cross Church, Willow Tearooms, Daily Record Building, The Hill House. Glasgow School of Arts is the greatest masterpiece of Glasgow’s prominent architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, built in 1897-1909. Among earlier architectural monuments the following are worth mentioning: Gothic Cathedral (1181 – 1508), Trades Hall (1791 – 1799) and Stock Market (1829 – 1830), built in Classicism style. In the church of Blessed John Duns Scotus some relics of Saint Valentine rest, where they were brought in 1999.

Glasgow is considered to be the center of Arts of Scotland and it is the venue of numerous festivals. There are more than 30 picture galleries and museums in the city, including the famous Burrell Collection, as well as the Gallery of Art, which belongs to the list of the richest museums and galleries of Europe.
