Los Angeles (USA, California)

Rains are most common for winter and spring months (February is the most humid month of the year). In average, precipitation in Los Angeles makes 381 millimeters annually. Snow is rare in the city itself, but mountains around Los Angeles are regularly covered with snow. Due to its unique climate, it is possible to go mountain skiing and surfing in Los Angeles on the same day.

According to the population census in 2000 there were 3,694,820 citizens in the city, 1,275,412 households, and 798,407 families. Therefore, the population density was 3,041.3 people per square kilometer. The racial composition of Los Angeles was as follows: 49.0 % whites, 10.0 % African Americans, 0.4 % Native Americans, 11.1 % Asians, 0.3 % – Pacific Islander Americans (Indigenous Australians), 26.9 % – representatives of other races. 48.9 % of population identified themselves as of Hispanic origin (Latin American). One of the biggest Diaspora of Asian and Latino population among the cities in the United States dwell in Los Angeles. There is also a significant Armenian Diaspora.

According to the census, out of 1,275,412 households 33.5 % had children, 41.9 % were married couples, 14.5 % had female householders, and 37.4 % were non-families. 28.5 % households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.83.

The age distribution was: 26.6 % – under 18, 11.1 % from 18 to 24, 34.1 % from 25 to 44, 18.6 % from 45 to 64, and 9.7 % – above 65. The median age was 32 years old. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 97.5 males. The median income in 2000 was $31 880 for males and $30 197 for females.

As of the beginning of 2006, there were 48 thousand homeless people in Los Angeles. The total number of citizens of Los Angeles County without shelter was 82 thousand people.

Los Angeles is a relatively young city and there are no world-known architectural sights on its territory. There are several Art Deco buildings, common for the beginning of the XX century, located in downtown Los Angeles.

The city is characterized with regular street pattern and low housing density – the majority of population dwells in private houses and villas. High rises are concentrated in the central part of the city (until 1956 the law prohibited building houses higher than 45 meters in the city). The modern architecture is represented in a large variety of residential, commercial and industrial buildings, among which are the works of Frank Gehry (Walt Disney Concert Hall, California Aerospace Museum, etc.), African American original architect Paul Williams, Thom Mayne, Eric Owen Moss, and other famous architects.

Historic center is virtually missing in the city – Los Angeles is composed of separate districts with their own history and landmarks. At the same time, the visitors can find many interesting things in the city’s streets. The following places are most popular with tourists:

Hollywood and its film studious, in some of which exhibits devoted to the film industry are opened, Hollywood Boulevard (so called “Walk of Fame” – where, since 1960, stars with names of outstanding film actors, as well as TV, music and theater industry celebrities are embedded on the sidewalks).

Old Mexican Olvera Street – a little piece of the olden time in the midst of glass and concrete of downtown Los Angeles.

Wilshire Boulevard, stretching for 24 kilometers from downtown to the ocean and its central part, known as the Miracle Mile, full of restaurants, night clubs, and etc.

Chinatown – is a little nook of the East in the metropolis’s center.

Funicular railway Angels Flight, which is sometimes called “the shortest railroad in the world”. It was built in 1901, closed in 1969, reconstructed in 1996 and closed on March 15, 2001, because of an accident.
U.S. Bank Tower – is a sky-scraper 310 meters high, one of the highest buildings in the world and the highest in US to the west of Chicago.

Exposition Park with Coliseum stadium (95 thousand seats) in it, where the Olympics were held in 1932 and 1984, museums of natural history, aerospace museum, industrial science museum, Afro American museum, etc.

Griffith Observatory with a planetarium, located on the territory of the eponymous park (the biggest city park in USA).

Los Angeles zoo, which is also situated in the Griffith Park.
Coastal beaches of Malibu, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach with warm and relatively clean waters.
