San Francisco (USA, California)

San Francisco has the biggest rate of same-sex households of all the US cities. According to the census, 2.7% of the whole population are same-sex couples, while according to some polls the total amount of homosexuals is close to 10% or 80,000 people.

In San Francisco in 2005, an average family earned 57,496 US dollars, which is the fifth highest among the large cities of US. In keeping with a national tendency to move from more expensive cities in pursuit of an increase of the income, many middle class residents left San Francisco which affected the percentage of children in the city. The city has 14.5 % children less compared to other big cities of the country. In San Francisco low income families make up 7.8% and this number is less than the average in the US.

The homeless are a chronic disease of San Francisco since the 1980s. In the city there are many homeless people per capita, more than in any other US city. An abundance of homeless people led to the increase of crime. For instance, in 2003, in San Francisco there were 5,725 grave offenses committed and 38,163 offenses related to property, which is above the average in the country. Among the 50 biggest cities, San Francisco holds the 32 place by the number of grave crimes and the 38 by the number of offenses related to property.

In San Francisco and suburbs a significant (around 20 thousand people) Russian-speaking community lives, manly in the Richmond district. This district is famous for a great number of Russian restaurants and shops. There is a Russian culture center founded in 1939. General Consulate of Russian Federation has its own history which goes back to the times of pre-revolutionary Russia, and since 1973 has been operating in the prestigious Pacific Heights District.

Media in Russian: the Russian Club of San Francisco – is an electronic newspaper in Russian; daily news, events and catalogue of Russian-speaking businessmen of San Francisco and the Bay area.
