Chef Gordon Ramsay

Ramsay is also known to have friendly relationships with one of his chefs, Marcus Wareing, the head of the two-starred «Petrus». Marcus in many ways repeated the way of his patron: he started working with Guy Savoy, Albert Roux, and, eventually, with Gordon himself at «Aubergine» as a Sous-Chef. In 2000, at Marcus’s wedding it was Gordon who was the best man, and not Wareing’s brother, concerning which there is a brief account in the documentary «Beyond Boiling Point».

Although Gordon Ramsay is known to the general public as a chef with quick-tempered and straight-forward character who can be rude and offending sometimes, but according to his colleagues this is just his management style, which he inherited from his tutors in the restaurant business. In reality, if Ramsay is seriously upset about something or provoked to anger, he prefers to avoid the conflict instead of trying to resolve it by yelling or, even worse, manhandling.

Another one of Ramsay’s peculiarities is the abundance of foul language in his speech. On the British TV where the word fuck is not censored after 9 p.m. (unlike other cursing words) the frequency of its usage by Ramsay quite often reaches the point when it is not easy to understand Gordon in the American version of the show.

Being a relatively tall person (188 cm), Ramsay is known to have disproportionally big feet (50.5 being the size). Because of this, Gordon only wears tailor-cut shoes and does not like to dance in public. Despite his extremely hot-tempered and straight-forward character, which led to many conflicts, Ramsay is credited with good attitude to his subordinates. Starting from 1993 and till 2005, only 15% of his employees left his holding due to various reasons. Ramsay is an ardent opposer of vegetarianism, although he acknowledges that whether to be a vegetarian or not – is a matter of personal choice. During the first official visit of Vladimir Putin as president of the Russian Federation to the United Kingdom, Gordon Ramsay was invited as the chef for the business lunch. Gordon’s brother, Ronald – a former heroin addict, was convicted many times for petty offences. Due to his wide fame of a champion of the non-print lexicon, one of Ramsay’s shows on British TV received the name «The F-word». In 2008, during filming one of the next episodes of the F-Word show in Iceland, Ramsay fell off a footing of a cliff where he was hunting for some rare species of puffins. After falling down some 85 meters and landing in ice water, Ramsay, according to his own testimony was on the verge of life and death. But he managed, although with great difficulty, to get up to the surface and catch a rope that was thrown to him by the filming crew.
