IRELAND is an island, one of the British Isles. 84 thousand sq. km. The biggest part of the island is occupied by the state of Ireland; north-east is the territory of Great Britain (Northern Ireland).

The central part of Ireland is a plain surrounded by mountains (up to 1,041 m high); Antrim Plateau is in the north-east. The main river is Shannon. There are many lakes, meadows and heaths. The biggest cities are Dublin and Belfast.
