UK Royal Mail Collectible Set in Commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Surrounded by Three Generations of Heirs

Queen Surrounded by Three Generations of Heirs

In commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, who turned ninety on April 21, the Royal Mail of the United Kingdom, issued a limited edition of collectible sets, consisting of an envelope with the post stamps, cancelled by a unique stamp, portraying the four generations of the Royal family, a booklet with major landmark events in Her Majesty’s life, and a Jubilee 5-pound coin.

The stamps portray Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II, and three generations of the heirs to the British throne: Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George. The photograph was taken last summer in the reception hall of Buckingham Palace by photographer Ranald Mackechnie, but it was made public only this year on the occasion of the Queen’s birthday. The portrait turned out to be very touching and sweet: smiling child George is holding his father William by the hand as he stands on a little platform. When we look at the picture, at the genuine smile of Prince George, we cannot help smiling too.

On the cancelling stamp there is an inscription, «Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday Windsor 21.4.2016», and in the centre, encircled by the vignettes, there are the words, «HAPPY 90 BIRTHDAY».

In the envelope, there is a little booklet with the photographs of the landmark events in the life of Her Majesty, and a coin with the nominal value 5 pounds, struck by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom to commemorate the 90th Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin was designed by the acclaimed artist and sculptor Christopher Hobbs. He was inspired by the heraldic rose of England, and the Queen’s love for flowers. In the middle of the coin the monogram of Her Majesty EIIR is placed, around which there is a cast crown of nine roses – one rose for every ten years in Her Majesty’s life. “I attempted to make the roses look more natural than the heraldic ones, each one is different from the others,” – the artist noted. The coins are made of different metals, including silver, gold, and platinum. Their value varies between 20 and 5 thousand pounds. The Royal Mint will present jubilee coins to all pensioners of the United Kingdom, who would also turn ninety on the Queen’s birthday.
