Elena Vasiliyevna Obraztsova, People’s Artist of the USSR died in Germany at the age of 75. This information was confirmed to INTERFAX by the Elena Obraztsova Charitable Foundation of Support for the Music Art.
“We mourn over the death of Elena Obraztsova. She passed away just half an hour ago. Her heart has stopped,” – commented to Interfax Natalia Ignatenko, the director of the Charitable Foundation.
She added that so far there is no information about the day of lying-in-state and funeral of the singer. Obraztsova’s body will be brought from Germany to Moscow.
At the end of November 2014, Elena Obraztsova’s secretary Ekaterina Shikalovich told Interfax that doctors advised the opera star to go to Germany for winter because of the climate. Due to this circumstance, her concert was cancelled, which was scheduled for December 11 at the StateKremlinPalace.
People’s Artist of the USSR Elena Obraztsova was born on 7 July 1939 inLeningrad. She performed at stages of the world’s biggest theaters and concert halls, including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London, and Vienna State Opera.
In 1975, at the festival of Carmen’s 100th anniversary in Spain, she was recognized as the best performing artists of Carmen’s part in the world.
In the year of La Scala’s 200th anniversary in 1978, she was awarded the Golden Verdi Prize for the outstanding performances of Verdi’s parts at stage of the theater in Milan.
The people’s artist gave master-classes in Europe and Russia; she was chairman of the judges of a number of European and International contests.
